Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh's father Vilasrao Deshmukh, former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Union minister for science and technology dies on Tuesday at Global Hospital in Chennai. He died due to liver and multiple organ failure.
Vilasrao Deshmukh, 67, was being treated in Chennai's Global Health City hospital since last Monday (6th Aug); after getting shifted from Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital. His condition said to have been critical all the while, owing to which doctors dropped the plan of conducting liver transplant operation.
Efforts to save Deshmukh became futile after a brain-dead man whose liver and kidney were to be transplanted, died hours before the transplant. It was reported that Riteish wanted to donate part of his liver to his father to save his life.
The film fraternity and politicians expressed shock and grief over the death of Vilasrao Deshmukh. President Pranab Mukherjee paid rich tributes describing him as a "towering" leader who was always in touch with the grassroots of society. A meeeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister passed a resolution condoling Deshmukh's death and hailing him as a "grassroots political leader" with extraordinary sensitivity to the people's needs.
The cabinet decided that Deshmukh will be given state funeral.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi will attend the funeral of Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
